Experience

- My Experience - I have been an active tutor to my peers since my junior year of high school and have since gone on to tutor many high school students (boys and girls) from grades 9-12. I especially enjoy teaching math and science, and have extensive experience in tutoring physics (mechanics and E&M), algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, and calculus. I am also an SAT I/II tutor and can offer mentorship services for the college application process. I interview prospective students for MIT and have a strong sense of what top universities are looking for in their applicants. At the college level, I have tutored physics to students of Boston area colleges, including MIT, Tufts, BU, and Northeastern. I was also an undergraduate teaching assistant for the classical mechanics physics class while I myself was a student at MIT. - Tutoring Style and Philosophy - My initial sessions usually begin by going over assignments and tests with the student to identify his/her specific challenges with the subject matter. Typical problems students struggle with include weak fundamentals, concept misinterpretations, and difficulty applying learned fundamentals and concepts to solving problems. Once I have determine the student's weakness(es), I will come up with examples to illustrate different ways to approach the problem or think about the idea. I strive to explain and illustrate the concepts they are being taught, why they are significant in the real world, and how they can be applied. I believe understanding the concepts in the context of real life applications allow for true understanding of the subject matter. I’ve found that many students may be able to “get by” in school just through pattern matching and learning definitions, but without fully understanding the fundamental ideas. However, these lapses in comprehension are generally exposed when the student is asked to apply concepts to answer questions phrased in ways they have never seen. I believe in teaching beyond the given subject matter: I want my students to learn to think in a deeper and more proactive way, improving their problem solving skills and giving them the confidence to approach and tackle any type of problem.
