Education

Stanford University, BA (with distinction), History, 1990, GPA 3.65/3.75 in major. Boston University, MA, English/Creative Writing, 1999, GPA 3.65.

Experience

I have taught English as a second language at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for over eight years. Mostly I teach writing—expository composition, graduate writing, and creative writing—but I also teach speaking and listening. Another wonderful experience was teaching academic reading and writing (ESL) to Chinese high school students in Tufts University's University Preparatory Program. I loved working with that age group and have also volunteered at Cambridge Ringe and Latin School. My first love is literature, and my graduate degree is in English and creative writing. I have taught American literature and creative writing at the college level, and I have published short stories, book reviews, and translations in national publications. My undergraduate degree at Stanford was in history, as I also love Europe, history, and international relations. This interest was spurred by my having the opportunity to travel to Europe (including Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union) with my soccer team in high school. After college (1990-91), I lived in Berlin, Germany, during the German Reunification, which was an amazing experience and left me fluent in German. I love languages and have studied Spanish in Costa Rica and, in recent years, Italian in Italy and here. In a "previous life"--i.e., before I switched to the humanities my junior year--I was an aspiring astrophysicist or engineer and completed the physics and calculus sequences. I also programmed a computer game and worked for an experiment for the NASA Space Shuttle, even writing code that flew in space. I want to be a tutor because I want to help everyone unlock their abilities and passions. I also understand what is necessary for success at the university level and will do my best to help you get there or get through there. I look forward to working with you.
