B.S. in Biology from The University of North Carolina Greensboro. Overall GPA was a 3.5 with 3.75 Science GPA. Minor in Chemistry. Graduated with Disciplinary Honors, completing a thesis titled "Genetic and cytological characterization of Z2-0193, a meiotic mutant in Drosophila melanogaster." Currently working for a lab at Harvard while I prepare to apply to PhD programs.

Experience

See below for information on previous tutoring experience, pricing details, relevant coursework, my tutoring style, policies, and other experience: Previous tutoring experience: Over the past few years, I have spent 1000+ hours tutoring. I worked for a service on my college campus that provided free tutoring to undergraduates taking historically difficult courses. I have tutored over 200 students and I haven't had any students who I haven't been able to help. Tutoring for this service gave me on the job tutor trainings and certifications (for information on CRLA tutoring certification, see this link (https://www.crla.net/index.php/certifications/about-crla-certifications). I also received a great deal of feedback from students that I tutored and my supervisors, through online surveys and frequent evaluations, which were all positive. I've also tutored privately and both the high school and college level. I have helped students improve their grades in a variety of biology and chemistry courses. I also have experience with helping students prepare for relevant standardized exams. Other experience: I also worked as a Chemistry TA at UNCG. Here, I was responsible for tutoring students in the class and essentially teaching my own lab section. I also have a lot of research experience. Like I said before, I did research in genetics. I also did research in sea turtles, box turtles, invertebrate neurobiology, ecology, and now immunology. Relevant Coursework (the only coursework listed relates to the subjects I have listed): - General Biology 1 & 2 - General Chemistry 1 & 2 - Microbiology - Biochemistry 1 & 2 - Genetics - Virology - Cell Biology - Immunology - Organic Chemistry 1 & 2 Tutoring Style: For biology related courses, I incorporate a lot of visual aids into my sessions. Typically, when on any given topic, I am asking the student questions about the topic to keep them involved. Simultaneously, I will either be drawing out a given topic or I'll have a visual aid on my computer to look at. I am generally very laid back when tutoring but this varies depending on the student. I also like to incorporate some study skills into all of sessions. I am very well known for my study guides. For chemistry, I like to work practice problems. Initially, we'll do them together, but the goal is to get to a point where the student no longer needs my help. Pricing Details: I accept payment via cash (preferred), check, or Venmo (an iPhone app) - 1 hour, individual session: $50/hour - Multi-hour sessions (ie 2 hours in a row): $35/hour (reduced rates available for 3 hours in a row and above) - If you want a longer session but don't want a full two hours? $10 for an extra 15 minutes - Group sessions - 2 students (popular with college students): $70/hour ($35/person) - Group sessions - 3 students (popular with college students): $80 an hour (about $27 per person) - Group sessions for groups of 4 and above are negotiable. This is the most economical option and is popular among college students. I have been known to do larger study sessions in the past before a big exam. - Discounts are also available for those who commit to weekly sessions for a duration of at least 3 months. Payments are generally monthly in these scenarios. Policies: - Travel: I do have a car and am willing travel up to 30 minutes away from Cambridge/Somerville area at my current hourly rate. - Where I will tutor: Library, coffeeshop (preferred), or in home. I would prefer that the first session be in a public place. During undergrad, I was also involved in a lot of research on campus. As I mentioned before, I did my honors thesis in genetics. For this project, I partially characterized a gene in the genome of Drosophila melanogaster, which are fruit flies. I also worked in labs that specialized in invertebrate neurobiology, phenotypic plasticity in plants, and sea turtles. I want to be a tutor (or in my case continue tutoring) because I personally really enjoyed it. The way my sessions typically work depends on the subject. Student involvement is really important regardless of the subject I'm tutoring. For biology, I like incorporate a lot of drawings. As I'm explaining a process, I like to be asking the student questions so we both see what they do and don't know. I'm also simultaneously drawing out exactly what's happening in this process. For chemistry, the student and I mainly work practice problems together until they are able to do them without my help.

Hobbies

My main hobbies include being outdoors (hiking), cooking (although I'm still learning), working out, reading, and exploring the Boston/Cambridge area. I just moved to the area so I enjoy trying various fun things around the city. I'm also currently in a social sports league. This sounds generic, but I also really enjoy television and film.
