Experience

Ever since I can remember, I've been tutoring in one form or another! From working with inner-city students to improve their reading in high school, from serving as a mentor to middle-school girls in college, I love the opportunities for learning and improvement that the tutoring environment provides. Even though I love the challenges and stimulation of being in front of a larger classroom, I still find time to tutor and continue developing one-on-one relationships with students, to really work on particular skills. As mentioned above, I've been tutoring since high school, mostly in the humanities -- I received an 800 verbal SAT score (back in a different scoring era!) and 5's on my AP English and History exams, so English (including reading and writing) and history were my areas of focus. While working in publishing in New York, I still tutored on the weekends, helping elementary school students practice their reading in the New York Public Library children's section. When I returned to school to get my Masters, I worked in the college tutoring center as a writing tutor. I got to work with a whole range of students, from freshmen learning to write essays to older ESL speakers brushing up their grammar. I also volunteered as an English tutor for refugees newly arrived in the US, through the Jewish Vocational Service. Now, I teach freshman writing at Pine Manor College, in a section geared towards international students. However, I still find myself tutoring! I also work as an ESL tutor online through Education First (EF), which allows me to conduct both group sessions and individual lessons with students of all ages, from around the world. I would love the opportunity to continue tutoring and using my skills to help more students develop their own.

Hobbies

I love reading and writing - I write book reviews for Kirkus Author Services, as well as writing short stories in my spare time. I'm a volunteer through Boston Cares, which connects volunteers to all kinds of different service organizations throughout the area - one of my favorites is playing Scrabble with seniors at Hale House. Additionally, I love traveling, volunteering in my local Jewish community, and spending time with family and friends!
