Education

I graduated from Phillips Academy Andover in 2015 Cum Laude, and will matriculate to Stanford University in the fall. I'm expecting to study Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity and Education.

Experience

I've been tutoring for volunteer, pay, and work duty hours at school since the ninth grade. I ultimately want to go into education, and I find teaching really rewarding. From my experience, I strongly believe that anyone can master a topic with perseverance and personalized instruction, but most schools don't have the resources to give kids who are struggling the support they need to thrive academically. I'm really passionate about making that support accessible to those who need it. It concerns me that many students I've worked with, especially those at schools that focus on memorization, have lost any excitement or personal pride they might once have associated with learning. A large focus of my tutoring style is on discovery and having fun. In my experience, a student taking ownership of the subject at hand can make a world of a difference in both performance and personal fulfillment. Outside of academics, as someone who just finished the college process, I have perspective without the loss of proximity that comes with time. I've always been a strong writer, but I struggled initially with my college essays, so I can sympathize. The importance of having someone to talk through ideas and structure with cannot be overstated. With the SAT, I remember very clearly what it was like to sit in a gym in silence with a hundred other students and fill in bubbles. I also remember working through immense pressure that I put on myself, and how I came to truly believe that my self-worth is independent of any college decision. I can help with the testing and the essays, but I also try to encourage a healthy perspective on the college process. I've worked the most in high school and middle school math and writing, college essay writing, and SAT prep.

Hobbies

In high school, I spent a lot of time in my school's Office of Community and Multicultural Development, and I'm hoping to pursue more social justice work in college. I've worked a lot with younger students (including teaching a class for credit) to encourage them to form their own thoughts and opinions about national and world issues and ideas about privilege and oppression. As far as hobbies go, I love playing soccer, reading, writing, hiking, and, most of all, hanging out with my friends and family.
