Experience

There is nothing greater than the wonder of discovery. As such, I have taken great pleasure in helping to satisfy people’s natural inquisitiveness for almost 5 years now. I have also helped them to achieve drastic improvements in their grades and/or standardized testing scores. I have privately tutored over 100 students aged 5-25+ in science (mainly physics) and math. Most recently I have been tutoring a small class in Roxbury MA on saturday mornings to prepare them for their SAT-math, and also an elementary class in Cambridge MA to encourage them to "explore" math for themselves, with my guidance and assistance. In terms of my one-to-one teaching, I have devised my own teaching methods as well as following GCSE/IB/A-level/SAT syllabuses, and set/graded past exam questions as part of my students' exam preparation. I passionately feel that my students’ successes are my own, so I have worked hard to develop techniques to allow them to grasp ideas more quickly. I have refined the art of explaining difficult concepts according to individual ways of thinking, and I am creative in my efforts to convey knowledge in fun and interesting ways. I like to set brainteasers and games, use props and draw on analogies to appeal to each student’s intuition. I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to be imaginative. As a result of my efforts, my students have obtained higher grades than their predicted scores and obtained places in some of the world's top private schools and universities, e.g. University of Cambridge. Moreover, I have experienced great satisfaction in seeing each student grow academically and blossom in their overall confidence. In my quest to spread my enthusiasm for science and education further, last summer I was involved in the development of a new tutoring school for 14-17 year olds in Cambridge. For this I prepared and taught a syllabus based on “out-of-the-box” interesting science that was not necessarily a part of the school curriculum. The purpose of this was to fuel the students' fascination about our physical reality, and it was a huge success. I also taught Physics and Math at a second summer school ("Reach") last year, for which I received excellent feedback from the students and coordinators alike. At the University of Cambridge I took on two major teaching roles. I was a demonstrator for first year students of Natural Sciences in my first year, and a Math supervisor to a total of 15 pairs of these students for the next three years. Here I taught complex mathematical concepts during hour-long tutorials, set and graded exam-style questions and discussed solutions with the students on a one-to-one basis. I moved to the Cambridge MA in December 2012, but I began teaching here online via Skype before I arrived. In the fall of 2012 I set up an online tutoring business, beginning with a Harvard Graduate School of Education. I supported this student in her class "Empirical Methods: Introduction to Statistics for Research," tutoring her in the actual material and supporting/editing her class assignments. She received an A grade in this class. I have since acquired a number of other online students from Cambridge UK. I tend to use online resources e.g. good websites to help with online teaching, and I set my students regular homeworks/assignments/past exam questions via email. I email their parents regular updates after each session. I am available to begin online tutoring immediately, either in person or online. I have a graphics tablet and I am able to share my screen with my tutees so that they can see exactly what I am writing. I can then email these notes to them at the end of our sessions.
