EducationI am an English as a Second Language (ESL) TEACHER and an ACCENT REDUCTION SPECIALIST
B.A. English (Studied in England for a year)
Former certified high school teacher in Massachusetts
[BE SURE TO SEE MY RATES BELOW, AS I USUALLY OFFER LONGER CLASSES THAN ONE HOUR.]
My students choose to have private lessons with me not because of any fancy degrees but because of my experience and knowledge. I always invite prospective students to have a free consultation.
ExperienceAs you will see from some of the testimonials below, when students come to me to improve English skills and/or to reduce accent, they often get so much more from these one-on-one sessions than they had expected. This is true not only because of my many years of teaching ESL English (since 1997), including the creation of my own system/method/materials, but also due to my extensive life experience.
I teach and have taught people from all walks of life – college and university students, graduate students, researchers and post docs, and professionals (professors, doctors, lawyers, businessmen/women, etc.).
For several years, I worked in language schools, teaching people from all around the world. During that time, I created courses in speaking and conversation, pronunciation and accent reduction, fluency skills (including vocabulary, idioms, phrasal verbs, correct phrasing and word choice), business fluency, listening skills, prepositions, and more. (My three-page résumé is always sent to those who express an interest in learning more. For more information and additional testimonials, potential students can also visit my website: www.eslkyrouz.com.)
My current students all benefit from the result of the hard work done in the past to create the best possible methods and approaches to improving English. My teaching centers around the needs, expressed desired improvement, and questions that my students have. I am very flexible and can answer most, if not all, questions. You will always have plenty of time to talk and to express yourself, and if you want, I can give you helpful corrections in grammar, pronunciation, and other aspects of English.
In some ways, you might feel like a little kid in a candy store with the variety of activities and approaches offered, along with proven techniques to bring about results. Equally great, I have created my own materials and provide links to help you improve outside of class that will help you in ways you have probably never imagined.
You will have the opportunity to learn more about any and all of the above points in more detail in a free one-hour consultation that I offer in person at a café in Central Square, Harvard Square, or Kendall Square – all close to where I have classes -- or on Skype, if you live far away.
During the free consultation, you will also have the opportunity to ask any and every question, the same as in my private class. This initial time together will also allow us to get to know each other better and to ask each other questions while giving you a “taste” of my teaching style.
It’s important to note that I am not doing this to earn extra money while I do something else or pursue a course of study. I am an ESL TEACHER and ACCENT REDUCTION SPECIALIST AS MY FULL FOCUS. This is my PROFESSION, in addition to ESL editing services that I offer my students and others (editing of papers, applications, dissertations, speeches, etc.).
As for English classes, I encourage students to do two-hour sessions because we can get so much done during that time, and it works best in terms of rates. I also have options for one and a half-hour sessions that cost slightly less than the two-hour sessions, in addition to three-hour sessions. I rarely do one-hour classes, as the longer classes have proven to be more effective.
Rates for TWO-HOUR One-on-One Private Lessons:
$97 per two-hour session when five sessions are paid in advance. (One trial session one time is $105.)
$92 for a two-hour session when ten sessions are paid in advance. (There is also an option for a prepaid twenty-session commitment.)
SPECIAL OFFER FOR PARTNERS, SPOUSES, FRIENDS, AND ANY TWO STUDENTS HAVING A TWO-HOUR CLASS TOGETHER: YOU PAY HALF THE RATE FOR THE SECOND PERSON. (This offer is valid only for five, ten, and twenty-session commitments for all classes that begin before Sept. 30, 2014.)
As Skype lessons are as equally intensive as in-person classes, the rates are the same.
GREAT LOCATION FOR CLASSES:
• About a five-minute walk from the BU Bridge!
• A reasonably short walk from the Central Square T Station!
• Walkable from Harvard Square!
• Street accessible by bus!
• FREE PARKING FOR CARS!
• EASY FOR BICYCLES!
HERE'S WHAT SOME OF MY STUDENTS HAVE WRITTEN ABOUT ME:
[Please note: All testimonials have been edited for grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.]
"I could never have imagined I would find such an enthusiastic, interesting, and wise person when I first contacted James. Meeting James has been a powerful experience for me, both in terms of my English and my life. He has been the most dedicated, patient, and efficient English teacher I have ever had. After two classes in Cambridge, we have continued on Skype. Never before have I improved so much in terms of conversation skills and in the understanding of the English language in all its aspects. With new techniques and different teaching approaches, he has found a way to engage me in the learning process and to make me desire and love every moment I spend surrounded by English.
"This is not about spending hours in front of boring and inanimate books anymore and has become a complete, fun, and more intuitive process, in which we focus on those weaker aspects of my current knowledge as they come up. The teaching has been individualized based on the different aspects I lack. Besides that, learning doesn't finish every time James' face fades away on my computer screen at the end of our Skype classes. James sends interesting and well-structured materials for me to work with at home and has given me pieces of advice regarding different activities related to English that have helped me to improve at my own speed. Our classes are definitely worth every dollar I pay for them."
-- Pablo, Spain
"I had learned English for a long time before I met James, but I could not make a real leap in speaking English. I would strongly recommend James to those of you who seriously want to improve your English. In the time I have been working with him, first with classes in Cambridge and now from South Korea on Skype, my English skills have definitely improved.
"James helps his students in so many different ways and provides continual support that goes beyond the classroom. After I started working with James soon after I arrived in the U.S., he began to show me effective ways to advance my English to higher and higher levels. He also closely guided me.
"James is not an ordinary teacher, and his class is not just about learning grammar and expressions. His teaching methods are customized and have evolved depending on my progress. He has further helped me cultivate more natural American rhythms and accents, which no other teachers could do in the past. If you choose James, you will have a great teacher and maybe even a trusted friend at the same time!"
-- Hessung, South Korea
"I worked with James for over a year. He was not only an excellent English teacher but also a life coach who helped me to overcome challenges in my work and in my life. I really appreciate what he taught me over the time we worked together. You will get more than you expect when you learn English with James."
-- Tiffany, Taiwan
"Having James as a teacher for a year was great. (I want to thank one of my German colleagues who gave me the tip to ask James to become my teacher, based on his own experience with James.) Now my other colleagues tell me that my English has improved a lot, and I feel much more comfortable having meetings or private conversations because I can rely on my improved understanding, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. James knew from our initial discussion that I had not been able to have classes with past English teachers for more than a short period of time and that traditional approaches would neither fit my personality nor my needs. He very often created special training materials to correct my mistakes. He sent these a few days before each class. Therefore I have my own training material today that I can always refer to, when needed. Finally, James understands a lot of foreign cultures and also U.S. people, and so besides being my English teacher he was also very often my intercultural trainer, explaining certain reactions or different behaviors that I didn't understand."
-- Markus, Germany
"I took over 30 hours of private lessons with James. He taught me some amazing methods to improve my pronunciation that I haven't gotten from any other teachers or classes. He also corrected my grammar mistakes every class, something none of my previous teachers/tutors had been able to do beyond the second class. James also helped me by editing my academic papers every week and by preparing me for an important presentation. He is a very hard worker, and he is the kind of teacher who won't let you go away without making sure that you have made progress. Moreover, he is very friendly, and it is always a pleasure to go to his classes."
-- Yann, France
"After a long period of taking private lessons with my teacher and friend, James, I can say that he is the best teacher in the world! He not only seemed to have answers to everything, but was also able to maintain a high level of energy, creativity, and enthusiasm. He knew exactly what I needed, and he explained everything so amazingly well that I understood everything he taught me very quickly. I learned so much about English from James and also how to improve my English outside of class. The materials he created and the regular attention he gave me outside of class also helped me a lot. I really looked forward to going to his classes every week!"
-- Amador, Spain
"It was by stroke-of-luck that I found James on the Internet while browsing for tutors/teachers to help with English speaking skills. In the beginning, I was afraid that this experience would be a tribulation, especially since I was unsure if my expectations would be met. James was immensely helpful in easing me and mapping a chart of my needs. He has developed a unique system to train students with variable language needs. His intonation technique is especially amazing, where the student also discovers the appropriate use of an expression while learning how to pronounce words and sentences. It was one of the best experiences I have had in a short period of time."
-- Raja, India
"I sincerely recommend James, a wonderful teacher not only in English but also in life guidance, to all who seek to improve English skills and/or who are eager to understand American culture and history. James has incredible cultural sensitivity and intellectual diversity as well as passion and patience in teaching. I have benefited tremendously from James in accent reduction, speaking/listening comprehension, and presentation skills (just to name three areas) since we started classes a while back. I have heartfelt gratitude to James for his continuing energy in teaching and for guiding me in many aspects, levels, and stages of life."
-- Ching-Fu, Taiwan
"James is an extraordinary teacher, providing a professional teaching approach combined with a fun working atmosphere. He easily identified my weak spots and came up with an individual approach to address these issues and resolve them. He is very motivating, encouraging, creative, highly skilled, and energetic, offering not only English lessons but learning for life as well. I enjoyed this holistic approach, benefitting from a unique teaching material data base which he created all by himself and which is still available to me now, even after I have finished classes. He is simply a great teacher, which you need to experience for yourself. Words can't explain."
-- Jürgen, Germany
"Working with James was the best investment I made while I was in Boston for a year. When I arrived, I had a lot of problems speaking English. I also had major problems with pronunciation and grammar. When I started working with James, he immediately began to help me to prioritize my learning process. He also challenged me in the right way to reach my very high goals. I felt that James helped me every second I was with him, and even when I was not in private class with him! When I had to prepare for presentations for my professional work, James gave me very valuable tips that made a big difference. He has a lot of experience in public speaking. Definitively, I can say that I got a big return on my investment. Now that I am back in Spain, I still work with James -- on Skype!"
