Experience

As a tutor, I love to accommodate each individual student's need by learning the way he or she studies best. I know personally that each student has a different styles of learning. Some students learn best when they see other people work out the problems in front of them. Some students are quicker to learn and would be able to figure out the problems from just a few hints. In the end, it's my responsibility to make sure that the students will be able to learn how to approach the problem and solve the problem independently without my help to prove their understanding. I've had experience tutoring my peers for 4 years in high school in math, science, and standardized testing. Besides normal tutoring, I also tutor online and teach a small class of high school students in competitive math for 4 years. Taking advantage of my young age and my ability to draw connections to the students, I was able to quickly figure out the most effective way to communicate to the students based on their styles of learning and personalities. Having gone through similar problems and having been in most of classes similar to those that the students have to go through, I understand the struggles that they have and know to accommodate their needs and maximize the effectiveness of my tutoring sessions. I would also like to introduce some personal information about myself. I'm currently an undergraduate student at Harvard College pursuing degrees in Economics and Applied Math. I personally enjoy volunteering and tutoring as I enjoy seeing the clear and dramatic impact of how my help assists the students' performance in school and affect their education in the long term. Sometimes, students lose interest in learning as they became discouraged by the low grades or the difficulty of learning a subject. However, by helping the students figure out an effective way to learn how to scope with these problems, I help them improve their performance in those subjects and over time, I do see a dramatic change in their attitudes toward these subjects. Some students completely fall in love with the subjects that they used to struggle. Seeing this transformation is incredibly inspirational and exciting. That's why I continue to love tutoring as this is something I enjoy doing and help me become a very active and meaningful member in the community I have also had many other achievements to testify my qualifications as a tutor as listed below: - 20+ math trophies and awards from local and state math competitions - 2310 SAT (Writing 790, Reading 720, Math 800) - IB diploma candidate - Valedictorian at Stanton College Prep. GPA: 4.92 - Taught 20 other children in speaking Vietnamese - Winners of 3 local/national essay contests- Student Who Cares essay contest, Mayor Brown essay contest, Student of Life essay contest finalist - 4 years of online/one-to-one tutoring in Chemistry, Math, SAT, ACT - experience in private tutoring over 20 students in Math, science, SAT, ESOL - Coaching a Precalculus competition team at Stanton College Prep for 4 years

Hobbies

During my free time, I enjoy watching movies, going out for a walk, hanging out with my friends, biking, or simply just talking to other people. I'm quite sociable and start a conversation easily with other people, even strangers. I share a great interest in learning how to cook and how to make origami even though I'm not good at either of them. I enjoy volunteering and participating in different forms of community service work, ranging from building houses, feeding the homeless shelter, to tutoring. I greatly enjoy learning about math, science, and the economy. I absolutely adore traveling and wish that I could have been able to travel more. In college, I definitely want to pursue an international internship opportunity that enables me to work abroad or an international language program to adopt a new language, possibly Japanese or Korean perhaps. I enjoy discussing about diversity and cultures. As an adventurous person who likes to explore new things and adopt new skills, I enjoy talking to my friends about different cultural traditions, holidays, and languages. That’s probably also why I want to focus more on the international aspect of the economy so that one day in the future I could obtain a career involving lots of traveling and interacting with different cultures.
